What is the best therapy for couples?

Couples Therapy

Couples therapy is a psychotherapy that can work wonders for a relationship between couples. In case you are experiencing any difficulty in the relationship, this therapy will aid you in rebuilding your relationship. It is highly effective in increasing intimacy, learning the ways of navigating the differences as an individual or simply for improving communication.

There are several approaches present for couples counseling. Each approach is different and the selection of a particular approach will depend on the goal you wish to achieve. Some of the most popular approaches include:

1. Gottman method

Psychologists Julie Gottman and John Gottman developed it. This method explores patterns of behavior found in unsuccessful and successful partnerships. The method prescribes ways to deal with destructive behaviors like:

  • Contempt

  • Stonewalling

  • Criticism

  • Defensiveness

Every couple is guided by the counselor  Erin Saintil, LCSW, BCBA and given special emphasis to focus in certain areas such as:

  • Watch and identify various triggers.

  • Share and furnish details about relationship histories

  • Explore all issues or areas of disagreement.

  • Realize the importance of shared values.

  • Take appropriate and corrective measures to manage all types of conflict.

2. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

When Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) first made its presence felt, addressed issues like:

  • Substance abuse

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Eating disorders

Thoughts influence human behavior. With continued research in this field, it has become effective in resolving communication problems and conflict resolution.

3. Discernment counseling

Discernment counseling found its application sometime around 2008. It was used in situations where one partner was looking forward to ending the relationship whereas the other partner wanted to save the relationship. It works brilliantly as a short-term approach where both the partners gain better clarity on varied aspects. This alternative gives the couple a chance to weigh in all options before they make a decision.

Coming to the types of counseling approaches adopted by the counselor Erin Saintil, LCSW, BCBA Tampa, FL, there are 4 types of approaches available. They are:

1. Psychodynamic

Based on the research and elaborate unearthing of famous psychiatrist Sigmund Freud, it emphasizes true understanding and knowledge between people. This is possible by relying on three human mind areas. These are the unconscious, the conscious, and the subconscious. This approach ensures the mind works in total harmony. It is achieved by bringing both the subconscious and unconscious mind into the conscious state.

2. Humanistic

The specialty of this approach is it gives greater importance to a person’s individuality. This approach makes a clear-cut distinction between life experiences and how the same is experienced. According to this approach, it is not the experiences that give rise to problems. On the contrary, it is how the same is experienced that determines the outcomes. The idea behind the counseling is to find amicable solutions to the problems simply by exploring feelings and thoughts.

3. Behavioral

This kind of counseling focuses on the environment an individual is surrounded with since it affects his/her behavior. As a person learns from the environment, the therapist concentrates to make sure the person unlearns such behavior. Couples struggling with many kinds of behavioral issues find it very helpful.

4. Integrative

This approach is a blend of the above-mentioned three approaches. It believes there is some amount of truth in each approach. On account of this, this approach integrates these three approaches to give a new one. Once combined, it believes in producing wonderful outcomes.
